October - Drug Awareness Month!!!

Red Ribbon Week: October 25 through October 29

Scotlandville Sports Academy participated in Red Ribbon Week, October 25th through October 29th, 2004. Red Ribbon Week is a week set aside to focus on substance abuse prevention by involving youth and their parents in activities/programs aimed at educating them on the horrors of substance usage. Programs, such as Just Say No, teaches the students why not to become a substance user/substance abuse statistic and how to handle the peer pressure that comes along with drugs & alcohol.

Scotlandville Sports Academy held its' Red Ribbon Week closing activity on October 29th, 2004. In conjunction with Metro Health (Baton Rouge), the Academy hosted a "Just Say No" Drug Rally complete with a guest speaker to discuss his experience with Alcohol and Drugs. Mrs. Lolis, Program Director of Metro Health,  involved the kids in games that centered around the slogan, "Be Smart, Don't Start". Everyone had a great time and gained valuable information.

Thank you Metro Health and all participants for making this week a very educational and fun week!!!  Remember: "BE SMART, DON'T START!!!"

SEMINARS
The purpose of the seminars is to pass on education, information, and assistance to our youth that participate in the Scotlandville Sports Academy’s sports programs. The Lift Every Voice and the Fundamental Friday Seminar Series are held during basketball and football seasons, respectively. Youth have an opportunity to learn from inspirational & professional speakers about Safety, Careers, Leadership, Morals/Values, and Self Discipline. Independent seminars are presented as follows: Team Work - April at the Scotlandville - 72nd Street BREC Park; Fitness – October at the Scotlandville - 72nd Street BREC Park; Louisiana Safe Night – October at the Scotlandville - 72nd Street BREC Park; Hygiene – November at the North Baton Rouge Community Center; Study Skills – August at the North Baton Rouge Community Center; Nutrition – December at the North Baton Rouge Community Center.

WE WORSHIP
This new program is called "We Worship" and it will fall under the category of Educational Activities in our current program structure. As coaches we have trained our youth to "practice together" and "play together", so with the "We Worship" program we will help introduce/train/guide/foster the importance of "praying together". The implementation of this program is very simple, we all go to church together at least once during a season. There is no maximum number of times we can attend service together but the minimum number will be one.  The denomination or church does not matter, that will be decided by the active coaches during that season. This will be a mandatory activity for all who participate in that overall seasonal activity. For example, all PeeWee/Junior/Senior basketball players and PeeWee/Junior/Senior cheerleaders & mascots will be required to participate during basketball season. We will put forth the same effort we give in preparing our kids for game day in getting them to participate in this program as well. We will give respect to any differences in religious belief.  We are not a religious based organization, but we all share the common knowledge that we are all children of GOD. It is not a board's directive but a heavenly directive that we share this with our children. "Raise the child in the path he/she should go and they shall never stray." The date for implementation of this new program was Sunday, February 1, 2004.
