ABOUT US
Scotlandville Sports Academy is a non-profit 501(c)(3) youth organization, based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, led by young inner city-based leaders organizing athletic and educational programs for youth, both boys and girls, ages 5 to 18.

Scotlandville Sports Academy's mission is to utilize organized sports as a tool to foster and nurture youth living in Baton Rouge's urban communities to become healthy, productive, well-rounded leaders.

In 1993, Shawn and Marlon Bates offered youth of the North Baton Rouge communities an alternative to "just hanging in the streets" by establishing the Scotlandville Hornets youth baseball and football teams. During this time span over 500 youth had an opportunity to participate in the sports.

In November 2000, eight community leaders united to create a Board of Directors. This Board assembled to further nourish this vision of enhancing the lives of at risk youth in the Baton Rouge community through structured athletics and educational activities. With this new organizational structure, the board adopted the name of Scotlandville Sports Academy. The name was chosen because of the techniques of coaching, as well as, educating that will be used to fulfill the organization's goals. The Hornets was the mascot chosen to represent all of the Scotlandville Sports Academy sponsored teams. The name, "Scotlandville Hornets", has historical value within the community served by the Scotlandville Sports Academy and would be used as a tool to strength community fellowship and pride. Scotlandville High School, known as the "Scotlandville Hornets", was the only public high school in the community before being closed in 1982. Leaving a void of community ownership unfilled. Scotlandville Sports Academy also adopted Scotlandville High School's colors of Black & Gold (see colored mascot above), bringing nostalgia of former days of glory to a forgotten community. Over the following months, the board developed a structured plan to serve and mentor a population of over 700 youth and their families. On March 28, 2001, Scotlandville Sports Academy became incorporated as a non-profit community organization in the State of Louisiana. In July 2001, Scotlandville Sports Academy received its tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Code under section 501(c)(3).
